Marcasite is a name commonly used in jewellery for the mineral pyrite (also known as iron-pyrites). The faceted stones simulate the sparkle of diamonds, and the effect can be similar to that of cut steel. The silver plating on the back of this necklace has worn thin and the copper base metal is visible.

Physical description | Thirteen faceted blue paste gems are surrounded by marcasites in silvered copper settings. The centre of each gem is crowned by a marcasite rosette. A matching pendant with a marcasite bow is suspended from the central gem. The ends of the necklace had at some point small silver loops for ribbons added. These loops bear an unidentified French maker's mark and a Paris warranty mark first introduced in 1838. |
