Louis Philippe was invited to become king of the French after the Revolution of 1830. He proved a worthy but not a great patron of the arts. In the 1840s he required porcelain services for his restored palaces and chateaux. But the Sèvres factory was disappointed to be asked to supply designs that were so austere.
