This table is intricately worked in a style of sandalwood carving for which the region of Coompta is renowned. Although the foliage and scenes from Hindu mythology are typically South Indian, the shape of the table derives from an English book of furniture designs, The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, published in 1829 and reissued as late as 1862. The author, Thomas King, described the design as a 'work table in the French style', and its production by sandalwood carvers in South India provides an idea of how reliant certain schools of India furniture-making were on western pattern books. This table was made for the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867, where it was exhibited by Jamsetjee Herjeetbhoy.
