Milk Jug

1754 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Potters found that it was impossible to make a pure white earthenware. Instead, the potters of Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire developed a shiny jet-black glaze that gave a perfect ground for decoration in gold. This jug does not simply copy Oriental lacquer of the time. It has a mock bottle-ticket hanging around its neck, which frames the owner's initials and the date, 1754.
