Percy Roberts (active 1866–83) demonstrated the effects of a range of wood engraving tools on this woodblock, the impression for which is E.367-1915. The numbers on the block correspond to numbered tools which relate to numbered squares on this block. Numbers 4, 14 and 22 on this block represent a tint tool for free work, foreground, buildings, a flat scorper for lowering areas needing to fade into light and flesh tints and a spitsticker used for drapery and texture like dotting. Roberts provided a detailed explanation as to all of the tools’ use.
