The Museum acquired this magnificent cotton tie-dyed head-cover from the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris for £20.The design depicts lions, elephants and dancers around the central motif, which represents the traditional Hindu rasamandala, a circle of dancers.

Cotton tie-dyed head-cover with gold brocade border. The design consists of a densely-filled ground with lions, elephants and dancers around a central medallion with the traditional design of a circle of dancers ( rasamandala )

Object history
This magnificent head-cover was acquired from the 1867 Paris exhibition for the unusually large sum of £20. Transferred from the India Museum in 1879. Slip book entry 5669: 'Woman's garment / Chorsa [?] / Newanuggur, Bombay / Price £20 / 1867 / Original nos. 4 / Valued on account of the time and labour bestowed on it in the dyeing / Incredibly fine tie-dyeing'.
