Brief description
Alabaster panel depicting St Peter. English, ca. 1400.
Physical description
The saint, wearing a bifid beard, stands under an embattled canopy. He wears a robe and a cloak draped over his shoulders. He holds a closed book in his left hand, and in his right hand, resting on his shoulder, he holds his emblem, two keys.

There are slight traces of green paint on the lower ground. The hair and beard of the saint have some gilding, but some of this looks modern, as does the light brown paint, especially on the upper background and on the keys. There is red on the folds of the cloak. Gesso knobs are missing from the background.

The back of the panel has been scooped out in the middle from top to bottom, presumably to lessen the weight, but in a manner reminiscent of a wood-carving technique. The bottom is cut away. There are two lead-plugged holes, one with the remains of latten wire.
