Popular woodcuts such as this were cheap to produce and could be used for decoration, pinned or pasted on to the walls of taverns and cottages. This woodcut has been coloured using a stencil. The artist would have placed the stencil on the surface to be painted and brushed the colour over it. A different stencil, cut to the required shape, would have been needed for each colour.

Physical description | Woodcut with stencil colouring entitled 'The Happy Marriage' depicting a couple on either side of a large bell holding a glowing heart aloft between them. On top of the heart stands an angel, resembling a shepherdess, clasping a sprig of leaves and a small animal. On either side of the couple are columns bearing various messages, and a pair of birds embrace on the tiled floor alongside a pair of miniature goats or sheep. |
