Object history | This design is almost certainly one of two mentioned in a paper read by Alan Cole at the Ordinary General Meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects on 17th March 1873. The paper, entitled 'On the Art of "Sgraffito" Decoration', argued for the adoption of sgraffito as a comparatively cheap, easy and effective means to decorate buildings. Registry records (MA/1/R1907) indicate that this design and its counterpart (E.36-1962) were given to the V&A by the Royal Institute of British Architects, included in a parcel of photographs. These records describe the two designs thus: 'Design in two [...] stages for Sgraffito decoration on the Science Schools at South Kensington, by Francis Wollaston Moody. Pen and wash.' Although Moody did design sgraffito decoration for the Science Schools, the two designs in question do not correspond to it. Rather, they were probably made for Cole's lecture so that he could theoretically demonstrate the visual effects of sgraffito as a potential means of decorating buildings generally. |
