Brief description | Alabaster statuette depicting St John the Evangelist. English, 15th century. |
Physical description | The saint stands with his head slightly inclined to his left. He is characteristically beardless. In his left hand he holds a scroll, which presumably bore the words of the Apostles' Creed attributed to him, his thumb and forefinger extended across it. In his right hand he holds a palm. He wears a robe and a cloak draped from his right shoulder. The head has been broken off at the neck and has been repaired. The palm is missing above hand level. The nose and mouth are damaged. Part of the figure at the bottom right is missing and the feet and bottom of the cloak have been broken off and repaired. Virtually no colour remains. There are slight traces of red in the folds of the cloak and green on the palm. The inscription on the scroll is missing. The back of the figure has been hollowed out, presumably to reduce the weight. There is one lead-plugged hole. The bottom has been cut away. |
