This screen print by the South African artist Gavin P. Jantjes was made while he was in political exile in Britain in the 1970s. While he was working at the Poster Collective in London he made a set of anti-racist screen prints designed to be used in schools. This print commemorates the infamous massacre of students in Soweto in South Africa on 16 June 1976. The image includes a poem by Steven Smith that echoes the new spirit of defiance against the brutalities of apartheid that was emerging at the time. Jantjes work at this time was overtly political. It directly mirrored the imagery of television and press reportage through which people in Britain came to know of events in South Africa.
