The standing Buddha with both hands raised in eposition (vitarkamudra) is an iconographic variation unique to South East Asia. It is specifically associated with Mon Buddhist of the Dvaravati kingdom, who prospered in central Thailand from the late 6th century until absorbed into the Angkorian empire in the 11th century. This bronze figure displays a monumental quality which reflects an awareness of Khmer sculpture, whose influence was beginning to penetrate the Mon style by this time.
