Place of origin |
This print depicts Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, displaying a bust of the Whig politician Charles James Fox. The bust was carved by Joseph Nollekens in 1791, and given to Catherine as a diplomatic gift. This print satirises Fox's claim to be a patriot, placing his bust ironically between statues of Demosthenes and Cicero, the great patriots of antiquity. The rope which hauls the bust into place resembles a hangman's noose.
