Drawing

1870 (illustrated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.

This is a sketch of Edwin Drood, for an illustration entitled Under The Trees. The published image features Edwin and his unhappy fiancée, Rosa Bud, sitting on a bench next to Cloisterham Cathedral. The page has been torn in half, so the original sketch presumably also included an image of Rosa.
