Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
These sketches are for an illustration entitled At The Piano, which shows many of the novel's main characters in John Jasper's drawing room. Mr Jasper is playing the piano while Rosa Bud is singing and Helena Landless stands between them. The drawing shows the full-length figure and face of Helena, while the sketch on the right depicts Rosa.
