Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This is a study for an illustration entitled Up The River. The published image shows Rosa Bud and Mr Grewgious in a boat on the river Thames, with Mr. Tartar and Lobley. The bridge and various buildings appear in the background. The view is of Putney Church and the wooden bridge that used to span the Thames at that point.
