Drawing
1869 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This drawing is one of a set of sketches made by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt during his travels in Spain in 1869. The sketches were turned into plates to illustrate his book, An Architect’s Note-Book in Spain, Principally Illustrating the Domestic Architecture of that Country, published in 1872. Dedicated to Digby Wyatt’s good friend, Owen Jones, the publication records buildings of architectural merit from the Spanish peninsular. To accompany the illustrations, Digby Wyatt offers notes on the history of each building.
As he explains in his introduction to the text, Digby Wyatt was motivated by what he saw as the disappearance of much of Spain’s architectural monuments due to destruction and abandon.
