The introduction of nylon into the commercial market in the 1950s helped to diversify the kinds of fabrics and finishes available, and innovations in printing and colour techniques put an end to the thirty-year dominance of tea-rose pink for underwear. Bright floral prints became popular, and Punch magazine of 16 March 1955, exclaimed: 'There is no pink - not in Paris.'

French chic

The introduction of nylon transformed the appearance and functionality of underwear from the late 1940s. It was lightweight, strong, hard-wearing and could be washed, drip-dried and worn again without ironing.

Nylon also came in an exciting range of colours and prints, as this matching bra and suspender belt from the 1950s illustrates.
