Object history | Roger Vandercruse Lacroix qualified as maître èbeniste in 1755. Historical significance: Both the cabinet work and the painitng of the porcelain are of outstanding quality and the painting and the tooled gilding of the plaque remain in excellent condition, with little scratching and abrasion. This table is an early example of the fashion for incorporating porcelain plaques into the design of small-scale furniture. This taste was initiated by the marchand-mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier, who was the originator of the idea of using such plaques and the principle purchaser of them during the 1760's. The table represents the early tray form of plaque and is of high quality. |
Historical context | The piece was accepted by the V&A in lieu of tax in 1997 but remains on loan at Longleat House, Wiltshire. |
