Brief description
Indian film booklet for the film 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' (1962), graphic, printed, paper, India, C20
Physical description
The front cover has a grey coloured background with a black fine-line drawing of a living room interior in the foreground, showing a small table with a bottle and glass on it, along with a man seated on a chaise-lounge watching a dancer. In the background the line drawing is of the exterior of a grand house with columns and arches, a tree and a horse and carriage. Superimposed on top of the entire cover is a more stylised line-drawing in white, starting from the right hand side there is a horse and carriage, in the centre is a dancer and at her feet is a huqqa pipe which is being held by the seated man (in the black line drawing), and on the left hand side is another woman holding what looks like various bottles in her hands. The title is in white in the top right hand corner.

In the inside cover is a synopsis of the film in English. There are eight pages in the booklet, five of them have a synopsis of the film and song lyrics in Hindi and the other three plus the inside back cover have the equivalent in Urdu.

The back cover has the film credits and on the left hand side four black and white stills of the main stars, Meena Kumari, Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman and Rehman.

Song Booklets

Song booklets are unique to Indian cinema. They contain a film synopsis, stills and song lyrics. The booklets were sold to the audience for a few annas (pence) and in the absence of cheap recordings people would be able to sing the songs at home using the lyrics. In most cases the text was reproduced in Hindi, Urdu and English. Often artists could be more creative and innovative with the booklet covers than the posters.

Exhibited with a selection of booklets.
