Trophy

ca. 1765-1775 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This carving must originally have formed part of the decoration of the fitted panelling of a room, possibly a music room. The design is close to that of trophies made in 1756 for the panelling of the Music Room at Norfolk House, St James's Square, London and it is possible that both were derived from the same published engravings.

Object history
Despite a long association, this trophy does not come from the Norfolk House Music Room. That room was only taken apart in 1938, long after this piece of carving came into the Museum collection. It is similar to the room trophies but not exactly the same. The design probably comes from the same engraving but its origin is unkown. (Information from Leela Meinertas from research done for British Galleries installation of room, 2001).
