This painting is from an album depicting the silk industry. In the 19th century in China families in rural areas often produced silk. They then sold their yarns or fabrics to silk merchants. This painting shows the various activities going on in the silk-producing areas. You can see the silk products being first weighed and then loaded on to a boat destined for towns and cities.

Object history | This painting is from an album depicting the silk industry. In the 19th century silk production in China was often carried out by rural families, who then sold their yarns or fabrics to silk merchants. This painting shows the various activities going on in the silk-producing areas. The silk products are first weighed then loaded on to a boat destined for towns and cities. One of sixteen paintings from a series numbered D.911 to 926-1901. Each sheet in the album depicting a different stage of the cultivation and manafacture of silk. Purchased from Carl Langweil, accessioned in 1901. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project. |
