Marks and inscriptions
  • Lettered in the lower centre: 'Alexander / Macedo'
  • Lettered in the lower centre between the margin and plate mark: 'Nicola. de. Br fecit Assuwerus van Londerseel - excudit 1594'
Object history
Plates 24913.1 to 24913.9 are original impressions from the suite of 12 portraist of Kings and heroes by Nicolaes de Bruyn published by Assueres van Londerseel in 1594.

There are three further states of this suite;

The second state is a later edition of the first where the publisher's name has been rubbed off (See V&A inventory numbers 13860.3; 13860.6; 27491.3; and 27491.2).

The third state also has the publisher's name rubbed off the lettering. In addition the portrait has been changed whilst the ornamental border remains the same. (See V&A inventory numbers 13860.5 and 13860.1).

The fourth state was published by Frederick de Wit and bears his name on the plate. As with the third state, the portrait has been changed whilst the ornamental border remains the same. (See V&A inventory number 2749.1)
