A woman's headdress or perak worn in the area of Ngari Rongchung, western Tibet, last worn in the mid-1970s. The multiple hanging silver chains with 'leaf' ends were only worn down on special occasions. The back of the headdress is covered with polished turquoises and lines of seed pearls, coral and embossed brass plaques, which together represent personal and family wealth in addition to being decorative elements.

Brief description | A felt woman's headdress or perak covered with polished turquoises, corals, seed pearls and beaten brass plaques, from western Tibet, Ngari Rongchung, ca. 1960-70. |
Physical description | A long triangular section of red felt onto which are sewn roughly polished turquoises, strips of ridged brass, seed pearls and corals. At the front is suspended a silver crescent off which hang silver chains ending in silver "leaves". Two sets of triple strands of coral beads held together with metal spacers, decorated with mother of pearl disks and ending in woollen tassels hang at each side from the silver crescent. |
