This damask furnishing fabric was woven in France in about 1930 for Betty Joel. It depicts stylised clouds, stormy weather and rough seas, following the 1930s trend for increasingly abstract designs in muted colours. Joel was a furniture and interior designer who sold French furnishings from the 1920s onwards from her showroom in Sloane Street, London.
