Lalique's name is most closely associated with opalescent glass of this type although it was first invented in the late 19th century. The opalescence is achieved by the inclusion of among other materials, bone ash and arsenic. The glass is then moulded, cooled and reheated repeatedly and this treatment results in the raised areas becoming opalescent. Because it was a more time-consuming technique, opalescent glass was more expensive than clear glass.
