Place of origin |
This circular relief (or 'tondo') representing the Virgin and Child is made after Francesco di Simone Ferrucci, in Florence in the second half of the fifteenth century.
It is an earlier cast taken from the marble version now in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (Kress Collection). The provenance cannot be established, but from its size and shape it appears to have been carved for a sepulchral monument, and is closely related in type and style to the Madonna relief on Francesco di Simone's monument to Alessandro Tartagni (d. 1477) in San Domenico Maggiore at Bologna. The original marble was probably intended for a similar sepulchral monument. Another version in painted stucco is in the Museé Jacquemart-André, Paris.

Object history | Purchased at Uxbridge (W. H. Ferry, £40). Previously in the hands of the Galleria Sangiorgio, Rome. The stucco is an old squeeze from a circular marble relief of the Virgin and Child by Francesco di Simone in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (Kress Collection). The provenance cannot be established, but from its size and shape it appears to have been carved for a sepulchral monument, and is closely related in type and style to the Madonna relief on the Tartagni monument in San Domenico Maggiore at Bologna. An attempt has been made to associate the relief at Raleigh with the tomb of Francesca Tornabuoni, a relief from which is preserved in the Museo Nazionale, Florence. |
