Marks and inscriptions | (Lettered with names of original artists and engraver, dedications, descriptions etc. in Latin. Numbered I - VII. E.516-1890 (Pl. VIII) has lettering cut off.) |
Object history | The Department has examples of Plates I - VIII from the above-named set. Plates I - III were engraved after drawings by Mengs by Angelo Campanella and Plates IV - VIII were engraved after drawings by von Maron by Campanella and Pietro Marco Vitali, von Maron having continued the project after the death of Mengs in 1779. A printed advertisement for the set issued by its publisher Camillo Buti (a copy of which is in the Department, reg. no. D.1479.2-1898) makes it clear from ink insertions that the publication of thirteen plates was contemplated. No complete set is recorded. The British Museum possesses hand-coloured, proof impressions (before letters) of eleven plates, plus some unbound duplicate impressions. There were formerly eight plates in the Berlin Collection. |
