A standing figure of Buddha with the feet and forearms missing. The upper robe is draped over both shoulders and falls in loose folds to the knees, revealing the undergarment below. The conventional wavy hair is drawn back over a bun-like ushnisha and there is a raised circular urna on the forehead. Fragmentary remains of an aureole survive from behind the ears to the shoulders.

Buddha About 200–450 Kushan period Originally, this Buddha would have had a halo behind his head. The ushnisha or protuberance on top of his head and the urna, a small circle on his forehead representing a tuft of hair, are among the 32 physical marks of a great man described in Buddhist texts. This figure was found in Gandhara, where Buddhist sculpture was influenced by Greek and Roman art. Schist Gandhara/North-West Pakistan Museum no. IS.70-1949 (05/12/2016)
