Place of origin |
This panel was made for a religious setting such as a church or monastic institution. The figure here is St Jerome, one of the four Fathers of the Western Church, in his study. One of the leading biblical scholars, he was responsible for gathering together what are known as the canonical books of the Bible.
St Jerome died in AD 420. He is often depicted, as here, with a lion. An early legend records that he pulled a thorn out of a lion's paw and consequently the lion became his devoted friend.
