Arms of Jorg Beier von Boppard

Roundel
ca. 1546 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This roundel was commissioned by a noble family for its home or castle. The arms depicted here are the full heraldic achievement of the Beier family of Boppard in the Rhineland. A heraldic achievement consists of a shield with arms, a helmet, crest, mantling and sometimes a family motto.

At the time of the Reformation, fewer churches commissioned stained glass. As a result, stained-glass artists in mainland Europe began to create secular designs such as coats of arms. This example is very finely painted with brown/black pigments and stain. It also includes one pice of coloured blue glass.
