Hobby horses are a very old sort of toy and pictures of them can be found dating back to the 16th century and earlier. Until the advent of trains in the Victorian era playing on rocking or hobby horses were a way in which children developed riding skills. This horse was made in the late 1990s at a time when traditional toys were experiencing a popular revival. It is a very fine example with a soft head.

Physical description | A hobby horse consisting of a long square stick with two small wheels at the base and the head of a horse at the other end, there are a pair of handles underneath the head. The stick, wheels and handles are stained a rich dark brown colour. The head is made of synthetic fur fabric, with grey mouth, grey and black ears, black face and white mane. The horse has a brown bridle with white stitching. |
