The artist and designer Roaul Dufy (1877-1953) worked in association with the firm of Bianchini-Férier (leading French silk manufacturers between 1911-1930) from 1911 to 1928. Subjects depicting scenes based on Greek mythology were very prevalent in dress fabrics at this time, and this design is typical of Dufy's striking Fauvist flowing style in which the flat forms undulate vertically through the 'all over' composition. This design was probably inspired by the 'Bestiare d'Orphée' which Dufy had worked on for a previous client. This design on point paper is ready for transfer onto the loom and thus is the last stage in the design process. The furnishing fabric 'Pegasus' is in the Textiles and Dress Department (T.1-1932).
