Marks and inscriptions | 'Painted by W. Peters R.A. Engraved by W. Dickinson. Sir John Fielding. As Chairman of the Quarter Sessions for the City of Westminster. London, Publish'd Novr. 12th 1778 by W: Dickinson & T: Watson No. 158. New Bond Street. Republished from the Original Plate in the possession of Henry Pownall Esqr. by Barclay Gerrard St. (Lettered) |
Production | This state is not described in John Chaloner Smith's British Mezzotinto Portraits. It seems that Smith did not encounter this republished state. The additional lettering - 'Republished from the Original Plate in the possession of Henry Pownall Esqr. by Barclay Gerrard St.'- suggests that this print was published later than 12 November 1778. Barclay, the publisher of this state, could possibly be the George Barclay of 22 Gerard Street, active in the second quarter of the 19th century. The former's address is given as Gerard Street. |
