Object history
Historical significance: This shoe represents a fashionable style of footwear in the late 1790s, characterised by the very pointed toe and ribbon bows instead of buckles. The heel is an example of the style known as 'Italian', with a wedge-like extension under the step. In June 1797, the Lady's Magazine announced that 'small Italian heels are again coming in with the rising generation.'
