The internal decoration was achieved by inlaying into the hot glass patterns in powdered metal oxides, and then overlaying these with a further layer. Navarre (1885-1971) trained as an architect, sculptor, gold and silversmith and in stained glass and mosaics techniques and had an established career as an important sculptor when he turned to glass in 1924, influenced by the sculptural qualities of Maurice Marinot's glass. His earliest glass was made by UMAD and shown at Edgar Brandt's shop but within a short time he was taken up by Maison Georges Rouard (where the art director was Marcel Goupy and from where this vase was purchased) and his glass was made at La Verrerie de la Plaine St. Denis.
