Sample book bound with red leather and marked in gold on the front: 'Club Colours, James & Edwardes Ltd' with their arms and the word 'Mancunium'. Inside the front cover is stamped the name Peter Bull [a tailor and the donor] with his Nottingham address.
The sample book is divided into twelve sections:
Old Boys, Universities and Colleges, Oxford Colleges and Clubs, Cambridge Colleges and Clubs, Clubs, London hospitals, Regiments, London Regiments, Indian Army, Dominion and Colonial Service, Air Forces and Naval, Cavalry and Yeomanry. Each page contains two columns of narrow striped silks, 16 per page except where some larger pieces are included [Regiments, Air Forces and Naval]. There are pencil marks by the silks. Some pages are blank but no samples are missing. There are 725 samples of the silks which would have been used for gentlemen's ties.
