William McTaggart (1835-1910) had a long and successful career as a landscape painter in both oil and watercolours. His paintings astonished contemporary critics. They can be likened to works by the French Impressionists, which are characterised by their freedom of style and their attention to the momentary effects of light, atmosphere and movement. Here McTaggart shows two children returning from the shore, followed by others, while a storm seems to be about to break. The purplish sky is threatening, and there are rushing clouds, crashing waves and wind-blown grasses. All are painted with characteristic energy and enthusiasm.
