A.W.N. Pugin was an architect and designer who produced a number of wallpapers, often designed specifically for individual clients. This wallpaper was designed for Lady Macdonald Lockhart to use in Lee Castle in Lanarkshire. The design is of the kind known as a rebus in which the things represented stand for a name - here 'Lockhart' is represented by a heart motif within a lock, linked to smaller outer cirlces which contain the monogram ML. There is a second example of this paper in another colourway in the V&A, museum number E.129-1939.
