Cast iron and steel
England; c. 1790
Probably designed by Robert Adam (1728-92)
The grate was probably cast by the Carron Company of Falkirk, Scotland (founded 1759), one of the pioneering manufacturers of decorative cast ironwork. John Adam (1712-92) became a partner in 1763 and with his brothers James (1732-94) and Robert produced a series of elegant railings, stoves, fireplaces surrounds and hob-grates with panels of relief decoration. The Neo-classical motifs on this example are very characteristic of the Adam brothers' work.
