The Century Guild were a group of designers and craftsmen who carried out various commissions for decorating and furnshing interiors. Members of the Guild included the architect, A.H. Mackmurdo, and Henry Horne, a designer and collector. One of their commissions was for Pownall Hall, Cheshire, a house extended and refurnished by the owner, Henry Boddington. In 1886 Boddington commissioned interior decoration, panelling, metal light fittings and furniture from the Guild, including this settle which was placed in the drawing room. It was probably designed by Mackmurdo, with fabric designed by Horne, and made for the Century Guild by E. Goodall of Manchester.

This was provided by the Century Guild as part of the furnishings of the drawing room at Pownall Hall, Cheshire, a house designed in 1886 for Henry Boddington. The Guild was established in 1882 by Mackmurdo and a number of like minded architects and designers to improve design standards. The upholstery fabric, 'Angel and Trumpet', is by Herbert Horne. The brass panels bear the inscription JUCUNDITAS-CORDIS-HAC-EST-VITS-ET-LONGOE VITAS and were probably designed by Bernard Creswick.
Object history
This settle was commissioned from the Century Guild by Henry Boddington as part of a large scheme of interior decoration and furniture for his house, Pownall Hall, Cheshire. It is likely that the settle was made by the Guild's Manchester agents, Messrs. Goodall & Co., of King Street, who made other furniture for the house. Evidence from contemporary views of the drawing room show that the settle was placed on the wall opposite the fireplace.
