The following is the full text of the entry: GANDOLFI, GAETANO (1734-1802) 1016 Roundels [1 of 2, the other no. 1017, museum number D.1211-1887] showing Vulcan at his forge and Juno riding in a car drawn by a pair of peacocks Inscribed on the mounts in a modern hand ‘G.B.Zani’ Pen and ink and wash, heightened with white, over black chalk, on pale brown paper Diameter 7 ½ and 7 ¾ (190 and 196) D.1210-1887 PROVENANCE Bought 1887 The former attribution to the obscure 17th century artist Giovanni Battista Zani, maintained till lately, is not very credible. The style of the two drawings points towards the Gandolfi brothers.
