Object history
These sketches bear the collector’s mark of the Earl of Warwick (1818-1893), (Lugt 2600) and were sold, with incorrect titles, as Lot no. 196 in the Warwick Sale at Christie’s 20-21 May 1896. The paintings were executed originally for the Lecture Room f the Royal Academy at Somerset House and were later transferred to the ceiling of the library at the National Gallery during the Royal Academy’s tenancy there. They were placed in their present position in the hall of Burlington House in 1899.
