In a gloomy room with a plain fireplace to the left, staircase back right and arched window giving out onto a garden, a man is asleep in a wing-chair in front of the fireplace; he wears a tartan kilt, jacket, bonnet and socks with a long plaid spilling onto the floor. Kneeling to his right is a sylph, her face turned to look out of the picture, wearing a calf-length low-necked dress with wings at the back, a floral wreath and pearl necklaces, bracelets, armbands and earrings; her right hand and left elbow rest on his right thigh, with the left hand beneath her chin, her face turned to look at the audience. Beneath the print: "La Sylphide d'après le tableau original appartenant à Mad.elle Taglioni"
