Quellinus was one of the last representatives of the great Flemish school of religious and history painting. He travelled across Italy and was particularly influenced by 16th-century Venetian artist Paolo Veronese. This is one of a series of preparatory drawings of biblical scenes for wall paintings in the Abbey of St Michael in Antwerp. It is typical of Quellinus’ style, with an imposing architectural setting derived from Veronese.
