Object history
The artist, Henry Compton was a page-in-waiting to George III. He married Miss Mary Dacres, lady in charge of the Royal children, in 1777. A chalk portrait of him by John Hoppner is also in the Museum collection (E.536-1950) and miniatures of him (P.11-1950, attributed to P.Collins) and his wife (P.9-1950, by A.B. Lens) are in the Paintings collection.
