Greetings Card
ca.1887 (published)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Christmas card publishers often commissioned popular artists of the day to design cards. These were illustrated by Harry Payne, a famous painter of military scenes. Such subjects may not seem all that festive today, but they were popular during peacetime in the late 19th century. Handsome servicemen wearing impressive, colourful uniforms sent a patriotic and sentimental message.
