Costume design for David Bowman as Tooley in "The Mines of Sulphur". The design depicts a full length male figure wearing early 18th century style costume. The costume consists of a knee length fur edged brown and black patterned jacket worn over a purple waistcoat; white shirt & cravat; and brown stockings & shoes. The figure also wears a long black cloak over his left shoulder, and a long grey curly wig. 3 Fabric swatches are pinned to the upper left hand corner, lower right hand corner, and at the centre of the left hand edge.

Object history | This costume design by Alix Stone is part of an extensive collection of designs purchased by the Theatre Museum directly from the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a production of Richard Rodney Bennett's opera "The Mines of Sulpur", performed by Sadler's Wells Opera at Sadler's Wells, February 24th 1965. The libretto was written by Beverley Cross. The production was directed by Colin Graham, and the lighting was designed by Robert Bryan. The production was revived by the Sadler's Wells Opera at the London Coliseum in September 1973, and by English National Opera North at the Leeds Grand Theatre in March 1980. |
