A model of a boat-shaped harp (soung) of carved and painted wood, decorated with glass and gilding, on a carved wooden stand. It has thirteen silken strings. Burma, 19th century.

Purchase (Engel Collection). This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
Production
Attribution note: The 1882 inventory describes this as a "model". The dimensions are smaller than those of the Curzon saung gauk IM 234-1927 and the one featured in S. Fraser Lu's "Burmese Lacquerware"; Bangkok 1985; p. 84.
