This box was made to contain a set of 12 teaspoons and one pair of sugar tongs. The set was assembled from pre-existing elements some time after 1895, when the manufacturing retailers Elkington & Co. opened a shop in Manchester. The tongs were made in 1861–2 and the teaspoons in 1875–6. Boxed sets such as these made attractive and useful presents.
The design of the spoons and tongs is known as Fiddle Pattern, which was very popular in the 19th century.
